How to Export a Vehicle from South Africa in 2026: The Complete Step-by-Step Guide

Exporting a vehicle from South Africa involves multiple government departments, tight documentation requirements, and logistics that can go wrong at any stage. Get one step out of sequence — or miss one document — and your export can be delayed by weeks.

This guide explains exactly what's required in 2026, whether you're exporting permanently to another country or temporarily for travel. Fast Track Auto Solutions is the only operator in Gauteng offering a fully end-to-end service: from document preparation all the way to port hand-in and shipping coordination.

Permanent vs Temporary Vehicle Export — What's the Difference?

The vehicle export process in South Africa is not one-size-fits-all. Before you begin, you need to know which type of export applies to your situation — because the documents, timeline and process are completely different.

Permanent Export

The vehicle is permanently deregistered from the South African eNaTIS system and leaves the country for good. This is required when selling a vehicle internationally, emigrating, or relocating a fleet vehicle permanently. The buyer in the destination country takes on the import and registration process at their end.

Temporary Export — Cross-Border Travel or Short-Term Use

The vehicle leaves South Africa temporarily — for a holiday, business trip, or short-term work abroad — and returns. You will need a Temporary Export Clearance rather than full deregistration. Your vehicle remains registered in South Africa.

Documents Required to Export a Vehicle from South Africa

Every document below is required. Missing even one will block your clearance at SAPS or your application at ITAC:

📄  1 — Original NaTIS registration certificate (logbook)
Proof you are the registered owner

📄  2 — Certified copy of your ID or valid passport

📄  3 — Proof of address
Utility bill or bank statement, not older than 3 months

📄  4 — ITAC Export Permit (IE362 form)
Issued by the International Trade Administration Commission
of South Africa. Required for permanent exports.

📄  5 — SAPS Export Police Clearance Certificate
Confirms the vehicle is not stolen and is cleared for export

📄  6 — Settlement letter from your bank
Mandatory if the vehicle is financed. Your bank charges for
this and takes 5–10 working days to issue it.

⚠️ Do not leave this to the last minute.

📄  7 — Letter of Authority (LOA)
Required if the registered owner will not be present — a
signed and certified authorisation letter is needed.

How to Export a Vehicle from South Africa — Step by Step

STEP 1  —  Contact Fast Track Auto Solutions

We verify your documents, confirm what is needed for your specific
destination country, and advise on the timeline. Different SADC
countries have different requirements at their border — we know
these well.

STEP 2  —  Bank Settlement Letter (if financed)

If your vehicle is still under finance, contact your bank immediately
to request the settlement letter. This is the single most common
cause of delays — banks take 5–10 working days and charge a fee.
We cannot proceed to SAPS clearance without this document.

STEP 3  —  ITAC Export Permit Application

We submit the IE362 export permit application to the International
Trade Administration Commission on your behalf. Processing typically
takes several working days.

STEP 4  —  SAPS Police Clearance for Export

We coordinate your SAPS inspection at an accredited Vehicle Clearance
Unit. The vehicle is physically inspected, VIN and engine numbers are
verified, and the export clearance certificate is issued. Typically
2–5 working days subject to SAPS queue times.

STEP 5  —  eNaTIS Deregistration

For permanent exports, we deregister the vehicle from eNaTIS. Once
deregistered, the vehicle cannot be used on South African roads and
must exit the country.

STEP 6  —  Customs Documentation (SAD500)

We prepare all SARS customs clearance paperwork for final release.
The SAD500 form is required for customs processing at the port or
border.

STEP 7  —  Port Hand-In & Shipping Coordination

This is where Fast Track Auto Solutions is unique: we physically
deliver your vehicle to the port and coordinate RoRo (Roll-on
Roll-off) or container shipping on your behalf. Most clearance
agents stop at the paperwork — we take the vehicle all the way
to the ship.

STEP 8  —  Tracking & Document Handover

You receive a complete export pack including the bill of lading,
clearance certificates, and shipping tracking. We provide updates
until the vehicle departs.

Where We Export To — SADC and International Destinations

SADC Countries

Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Malawi, Lesotho,
Eswatini — these are the most common export destinations and
typically have shorter processing times. Each country has specific
documentation requirements at the border which we prepare for.

International Shipping

We facilitate exports through Durban, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth
to the UK, Australia, USA, UAE, Europe, and Asia. Container or RoRo
shipping is arranged depending on the destination and vehicle type.

Common Mistakes That Delay Vehicle Exports from South Africa

These are the mistakes we see every week — avoid them and your
export will move significantly faster:

🚫  Not ordering the bank settlement letter early enough
This is the single most common cause of delays

🚫  Assuming the vehicle is export-ready without checking outstanding
    fines, licensing arrears, or finance

🚫  Not verifying that the engine number on the vehicle matches
eNaTIS records before the SAPS inspection

🚫  Using a clearance agent who only handles paperwork — leaving you
to coordinate logistics, port delivery and shipping yourself

🚫  Leaving ITAC permit applications too late
    They do not process overnight

Frequently Asked Questions About Vehicle Export from South Africa

❓  How long does the full vehicle export process take in South Africa?

From first contact to vehicle departure, allow 2–4 weeks for a
straightforward case with all documents in order. The main variables
are SAPS queue times, ITAC processing, and the bank settlement letter
if financed. Contact us early — we will give you a realistic timeline
for your specific situation.

──────────────────────────────────────────

❓  Can I export a vehicle that is still financed?

Yes, but your bank must issue a settlement letter authorising the
export. Most banks charge for this and take 5–10 working days. The
vehicle cannot leave the country without it.

──────────────────────────────────────────

Do I need police clearance even for a neighbouring country
    like Botswana?

Yes. SAPS export clearance is required regardless of the destination
— it is a South African legal requirement, not the destination
country's. Border officials in SADC countries also increasingly
check for it.

──────────────────────────────────────────

❓  What if my vehicle has outstanding fines?

Outstanding traffic fines will show up during the SAPS clearance
process and may block your export. It is best to check and clear
these before applying. We can advise on how to check your vehicle's
fines status.

❓  I am a dealership exporting multiple vehicles — can you help?

Yes. Fast Track Auto Solutions has been handling dealership exports
for over 15 years. Contact us directly to discuss trade volumes
and pricing.
